FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
New York, NY – Wednesday, March 4, 2026 – Today, Sen. Adam Schiff and Sen. Tina Smith, along with Representatives Takano, Pocan, and Balint introduced the PrEP Access & Coverage Act. PrEP4All sincerely thanks our leaders in Congress for their efforts and commitment to equitable PrEP access. The bill, in concert with the PrEP Access Program Act which addresses the needs of uninsured populations in the US, represents a comprehensive vision for PrEP access regardless of an individual’s insurance status in America.
“We’re grateful to Senator Smith and Senator Schiff for their leadership on the PrEP Access and Coverage Act,” states Jeremiah Johnson, Executive Director. “Communities most impacted by HIV continue to face unnecessary complexity in accessing PrEP medications, required lab work, and other essential services. With only one in four of the 2.2 million Americans who could benefit from PrEP currently able to access it, the need for clear, consistent, no-nonsense PrEP coverage across all public and private insurers is urgent.”
“Black people make up just 15% of PrEP users despite representing 38% of new diagnoses.” states Michael Chancley, Communications and Mobilization Manager and long-time PrEP user. “At a moment when protections for preventive care are being actively undermined, Black and Latinx people, transgender people, and cisgender women stand to be the most disproportionately impacted by lack of PrEP access. This legislation would safeguard and strengthen a national vision for PrEP access that aligns with our shared goal of ending HIV as an epidemic for all.”
Jointly, the PrEP Access & Coverage Act and PrEP Access Program Act support PrEP4All’s vision of universal PrEP access for all Americans regardless of race, gender, socioeconomic status, or geographic region.
